Why
Should
We
Pray?
Prayer is a means of
communication between you and God. Prayer is, if you like, a direct line to God.
Like a mobile phone that allows you to make calls to anywhere at any time,
prayer is your permanent means of communication with God. Prayer is available to
all who believe in the power of the resurrection of Christ and accept Him as
their personal Lord and Savior. To Christians, prayer is their means of sharing
their hopes and fears, their joy and sorrows with God. It is also a means by
which they express adoration and praise to God their Father. Pray for
yourself--and for others--every day.

What's with the bells at Noon and 6?
For
those of you who live relatively near to St. John the Baptist, you
may have noticed that, on the hour we chime a series of Marian
songs--those songs dedicated to our Blessed Mother. The church
bells toll each day, beginning at 8 AM and continuing on the hour
until 6PM. In deference to our neighbors, we don't want to disturb
family time at night. But did you also know that our bells toll for
a specific prayer at Noon and 6 PM? For centuries throughout the
world, Catholics were acustomed to offering a special prayer to Our
Lady each day, commemorating the Annunciation by the Archangel
Gabriel. The Angelus, as this special prayer is
known, was typically prayed by villagers, farmers and laborers every
day at 6AM, Noon and 6PM. They would stop what they were doing,
kneel, and pray the Angelus. This tradition has fallen by the
wayside throughout the last several decades. At St. John, we have
programed our bells to return to that tradition and hope you will
join us when you hear them toll at Noon and 6PM. The format is as
follows:
At the first toll, say, "The Angel of the Lord
declared unto Mary." Then, "And she conceived by the Holy Spirit."
Then pray the Hail Mary.
At the second toll, say, "Behold the handmaid of
the Lord." Then, "Be it done unto me according to Your Word." Then
pray the Hail Mary.
At the third toll, say, "And the Word was made
flesh." Then, "And dwelt among us." Then pray the Hail Mary.
Continue with, "Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God."
Then, "That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ."
When
you hear a series of continual bell tolls, say, "Pour forth, we
beseech Thee O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts, that we to whom the
incarnation of Christ your Son, was made known by the message of an
Angel, may by His Passion and His Cross be brought to the glory of
His Resurrection. Through the same, Christ our Lord. Amen."
Conclude by repeating the Glory Be three times.
Whether or not you live close enough to St. John to hear the tower
bells, we hope you will re-start this 700 year-old tradition with
your family at home or work, daily. Remember, "The family that
prays together, stays together." |

Father Bayhi and Aaron Neville -
"Doing It Their Own Way"
Would you like to volunteer to be a Guardian of the Blessed
Sacrament at St. John's?
Call the Parish Office to accept a regular schedule at 654-5778

A woman was sharing information she had learned
about another.
The priest said, "For penance, I want you
to go home, take a pillow up on your roof, cut it open with a
knife, and return here to me."
So the woman went home, took a pillow off
her bed, went up the fire escape, and stabbed the pillow.
"Did you gut the pillow with the knife?"
he says. "Yes, father". "And what was the result?". "Feathers,
everywhere!" So the old priest told her, "Now I want you to go back and gather
every last feather that flew out on the wind".
"Well", she said, "It can’t be done. I
don’t know where they went. The wind took them all over."
"And that", he
said, "is GOSSIP." |
