Mass Stewards

Are you ready to begin serving Our Lord by participating in one of the many Ministries needed to keep the church going?  Mass Stewards are always needed, which includes Ushers, Lectors/Commentators, Ministers of the Eucharist, and choir members.  Continue reading below. If these things don't seem to be the right choice for you, consider joining one of the church organizations that we rely on to keep the church, its physical plant and the day-to-day operations running smoothly.

Ministers of the Eucharist

Ministers of the Eucharist

*       Eucharistic Ministers are responsible for FINDING A SUBSTITUTE if you are unable to serve at your assigned time.

*       Please dress appropriately to serve.  Men should wear coat and tie except during warm summer days when a shirt and tie are acceptable.  Women should be sufficiently covered wearing a dressy dress or dressy pants suit.  If not wearing a dress, women should have three pieces:  pants or skirt, top & coat or jacket. Sandals are appropriate for women, please-no flip-flops.

*       Meet in the Sacristy at least 15 minutes before Mass and sign in. If you are not in place (signed in) by ten minutes before Mass begins, we must find a substitute. Should you arrive after a replacement has been found, you cannot serve.

*       After Father leads a prayer with all servers, ministers, and lectors, you may rejoin your family seated in the congregation.

*       3H and 5C are responsible for set-up/clean-up, respectively. Place Father’s chalice on the altar before Mass.  Place the covered wine chalices (4), purificators (4) and empty ciboria (2) on the Credence Table.  Place the gifts of wine and unconsecrated hosts on the gift table at the entrance of church. See details in the Sacristy for the complete set-up routine for each Mass.  Note:  During any period in which the Precious Body has been suspended, we will use only enough Eucharistic Ministers to distribute the Precious Body.  Therefore, your duties for set-up and clean up may change during this time.

*       When approaching the Altar, all persons serving ON the Altar are to approach with hands folded in prayer position, bow or genuflect toward the Tabernacle, and proceed to your position. When leaving the Altar, your hands should remain folded in the prayer position.  Also, even though you may have just bowed to the Tabernacle while completing your duties, when you reach the bottom step, you are to again bow or genuflect again, showing reverence to the Blessed Sacrament.

*       Please do your best to never turn your back to the Tabernacle when on the Altar.  When you are serving during Mass, your bow or genuflection is to the Blessed Sacrament, not to Father or to a deacon.

*       As soon as Father begins the Agnus Day (Lamb of God), Eucharistic Ministers are to immediately proceed to the Altar and join the formation as quickly as possible. Please do not stop to shake hands or offer other signs of peace, thereby delaying the distribution of the Blessed Sacrament.

*       If serving the Precious Body, Eucharistic Ministers are to sanitize hands at the Credence Table and join the formation.  When returning from Communion Service, purify your hands in the Oblution Dish at the Tabernacle, then turn to the Credence Table and sanitize your hands again, and re-join the formation.

*       As Father places the Blessed Sacrament back in the Tabernacle, Eucharistic Ministers—and all others on the Altar—are to bow to the Tabernacle.  When dismissed by Father, proceed down to the front, center of the Altar, turn back, reverence the Tabernacle again by bowing or genuflecting, and return to your seat.

*       If, after serving all those in line in your section, there is a large crowd still in need of Communion in Our Lady's Chapel (the overflow section), one other person should proceed to the Baptismal Font to assist with that line.  If Father has already gone to that section, no one else needs to assist.  Once 7C has finished serving the overflow section, you should turn around & begin serving those coming from the main line (see diagram above).  All others should return to the Altar, placing ciborium/chalice on the Altar (please to not transfer the Blessed Sacrament) from one vessel to another on the Altar.  Father will do that.

*       Never give "Jesus to Go."  It is forbidden to give anyone additional Communion Host(s), whether in hand or in a Pyx, to be taken to any other person or to be consumed later.  Should anyone ask for such, please politely explain that it is not possible or direct them to Father so he can explain. Anyone officially commissioned to deliver Communion to the infirmed or to shut-ins should place a Pyx on beside the Tabernacle before Mass and Father will place one host in the pyx during Holy Communion.

*       If someone approaches you in the Communion line who is not Catholic (usually, they will have their hands crossed over their chest), you may bless them with the sign of the cross on their forehead.  If they seem unfamiliar with the proper way to receive the Blessed Sacrament or if they seem a little out-of-place, it is perfectly appropriate to politely ask if they are not Catholic.  If they state that they are not, you should always bless them in the prayerful hope of worldwide Christian unity.

*       If you or a Communicant drops the Blessed Sacrament on the floor, you—not they—should immediately pick it up.  If you are comfortable consuming it yourself, you may do so.  If you are not, please keep it in your hand and give it to Father when you return to the Altar or you may place it in the Sacred Repository after Communion.  NEVER discard the Precious Body or Blood, as they are truly the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Our Lord and must be treated with the utmost respect.

*       If you, or a Communicant spills the Precious Blood on the floor, stop your line, immediately get a linen purificator, place it over the entire spill and be certain that others step around it until after Mass. This is the Precious Blood of Christ and must not be contaminated. When in doubt, always ask Father but never walk on or allow anyone else to walk on any spills.

LECTORS/COMMENTATORS

BEFORE MASS

  • All Lectors/Commentators are responsible for FINDING A SUBSTITUTE if you are unable to serve at your assigned time.
  • Lectors should dress appropriately to serve.  Men should wear coat and tie except during warm summer days when a shirt and tie are acceptable.  Women should be sufficiently covered wearing a dressy dress or dressy pants suit.  If not wearing a dress, women should have three pieces:  pants or skirt, top and coat or jacket. Sandals are appropriate for women, as long as they are not flip-flops.
  • Meet in the Sacristy at least 15 minutes before Mass and sign in. If you are not in place (signed in) by ten minutes before Mass begins, we are required to find a substitute from the congregation.  Important:  Should you arrive after a replacement has been found, you will be asked to take a seat and the substitute will continue in your position.

     DURING MASS

  • Lector 2 takes the Lectionary and the Book of the Liturgy (the cloth binder) to the Altar about 3 minutes before Mass begins.  Bow at the center of the Altar, with hands folded in prayer formation, and proceed to the Ambo.  Read the "Welcome" page in the front of the binder.  Note:  Be certain to see if Children's Liturgy is scheduled for that Mass, or if there are any special notations for that particular Mass.   Follow the directions on that page.  When you ask the congregation to stand and join you in the celebration of the Eucharist, wait about 30 seconds (once the choir has begun the Processional Hymn) and step down off the Altar--with hands in prayer formation--positioning yourself about 5 feet to the left off the center carpet.  Wait there until the procession makes it to the Altar, bow with everyone on Father's queue, and take your seat until it is time for you to read.
  • Lector joins the procession, just behind the Cross, carrying the Book of Gospels.  When you approach the Altar and everyone bows or genuflects (on Father's queue), step up and place the Book of Gospels on the center of the main Altar, bow and take your seat until after the Gloria is sung or spoken.
  • After Father leads a prayer with all servers, ministers, and lectors, you may rejoin your family seated in the congregation.
  • After Father completes the Penitential Rite and Opening prayers, and after the Gloria is sung or spoken, Lector 1 will approach the Altar, bow, and approach the Ambo (lectern) with hands folded in prayer.  Note: It is fine to walk in front of Father in the process.
  • When you approach the ambo, adjust the mic so you can be heard and begin the reading (Be sure the lectionary is marked before Mass begins.  It is virtually impossible to find the right readings once you get to the ambo without uncomfortable delays).
  • If the Responsorial Psalm is to be spoken (check the Liturgy packet before Mass), pause about 15 seconds and continue with that reading.  DO NOT SAY "The Responsorial Psalm is. . . "  They already know that you're about to read the Response.  Just proceed.
  • When you complete your reading, return--with hands folded in prayer formation--to the center of the Altar, where the 2nd lector will join you.  You both bow and Lector returns to his/her seat while Lector 2 approaches the ambo.  **When the Response is sung by the choir, there is no need for Lector 1 to wait on the Altar.  Take your seat after the choir begins to sing.  Lector 2 will proceed to the Altar and then to the ambo at the end of the song, in that case.
  • When Father completes his homily (sermon), Lector 1 will return to the Altar, again with hands folded in prayer, and read the General Intercessions/Prayers of the Faithful.

Ministers of Holy Communion

Are you a minister of Holy Communion to the Homebound?  Click here for quarterly schedule

COMMUNION FOR THE HOMEBOUND BY AN EXTRAORDINARY MINISTER OF THE EUCHARIST

In the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the Holy Spirit. . .

May the grace, peace and healing presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

R. And also with you

Trusting in the merciful presence of our Lord and Savior let us pray as He taught us.

Our Father who art in Heaven....

(Making the sign of the cross)

May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life.

May almighty God grant us pardon, absolution and remission of our sins.

(Removing the host from the pyx, and displaying it between the thumb and forefinger)

THIS IS THE LAMB OF GOD, THIS IS HE WHO TAKES AWAY THE SINS OF THE WORLD, HOW HAPPY ARE WE WHO ARE CALLED TO SHARE IN HIS SUPPER!

Lord I am not worthy to receive you, only say the word and I shall be healed.

THE BODY OF CHRIST

(After a momentary pause)

Take and receive this food and let it become for you a source of spiritual, physical and mental strength.

In the Name of the Father.......
