Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

June 17, 2012

They that are planted in the house

of the Lord

shall flourish in the courts

of our God.

—Psalm 92:14

GOD’S TIME

We either pay attention to or ignore "clock time" as we play in the summer sun and note the earth’s tilt and the lengthening days. We live by time. We reckon time in seconds and minutes and hours, or we use broader chunks like suppertime and summertime.

God keeps another sort of time. God speaks to us of "saving time," that is, the time of salvation. This sense of time is called kairos, and this time is always now, always present and available, always revealing, often surprising.

This Sunday’s readings alert us to the reality and the import of God’s time. Ezekiel and the Gospel of Mark remind us that our labor and our plotting and our planning rest in God. For God takes our smallest efforts and makes of them great works. Paul points us to the "harvest" time, urges us to be watchful for its coming, and calls us to recognize that we must spend our time pleasing God.

Does the Church tell us who we should vote for?

No. The Church does not tell us who to vote for. It does not endorse an official list of candidates or tell us which party Catholics should join. Instead, Catholics are to use their judgment and follow their consciences as they apply the teachings of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the core values of their faith to the choices they make when voting. As Catholics who follow the "challenging call to discipleship," we need to evaluate the issues and candidates in the light of our faith. Then we are challenged to live out our faith by getting actively involved - by voting and engaging in civic activities.

In Sympathy....

Our Communities of Faith

extend our sympathy and prayerful support for the families of Vera Mays, parishioner

of St. John, and Noel Deming, husband of Lina Deming. May the Lord grant comfort and peace to these families, and may they and all who sleep in Christ, find in God’s presence, light, happiness, and peace.

Not Married in the Church Because of a Former Marriage?

Annulments are not punishment; they do not affect children; they do not assign blame to one party or another. Much to the contrary, annulments simply determine if a prior bond was not Sacramentally called by God to be an everlasting covenant. The process is much easier than you may think, is not expensive and ultimately serves to purge all the old baggage that may be holding you back from being in full Communion with the Church. Come by the parish office to begin the process!

On your journey in life, listen to the Father, Son and Spirit, for guidance toward a life of

fulfillment and happiness.  Then, if you think God is calling you to a vocation, please contact

Fr. Matt Dupre at the Diocese of Baton Rouge at 336-8778.

Marriage Annulment

If you have remarried and are not able to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist, you are missing out on one of the fundamental gifts of Jesus Christ when He started our Church. If you have been thinking about applying for an annulment so that you can get your marriage blessed and return to full Communion with Our Lord, please visit our website at www.sjb-ola.org, pick up a brochure entitled "Marriage Annulment-Diocesan Tribunal of Baton Rouge" in the office, or call Ric at the parish office.

St. Bernardine

Most of the saints suffer great personal opposition, even persecution. Bernardine, by contrast, seems more like a human dynamo who simply took on the needs of the world.

He was the greatest preacher of his time, journeying across Italy, calming strife-torn cities, attacking the paganism he found rampant, attracting crowds of 30,000, following St. Francis’s admonition to preach about "vice and virtue, punishment and glory."

Compared with St. Paul by the pope, Bernardine had a keen intuition of the needs of the time, along with solid holiness and boundless energy and joy. He accomplished all this despite having a very weak and hoarse voice, miraculously improved later because of his devotion to Mary. www.americancatholic.org

Our Lady of Lourdes

Our Lady appeared 18 times at Lourdes, in the Pyrenees mountains in southern France, in 1858, to Bernadette Soubirous, a fourteen year old peasant girl. A spring appeared there which feeds the baths at the shrine today. Many miraculous healings are reported from bathing in the waters. The fact that there is no spread of infection, even though no sanitary precautions are taken when people with all sorts of diseases take baths there, is a marvel in itself. Many miracles take place when the Blessed Sacrament passes in procession during the great pilgrimages. In passing, we notice that this fact testifies to the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Eucharist there, a Presence which only the Catholic Church has, and only the Catholic Church teaches. There is a medical bureau there, to which any qualified M. D. can come to check alleged cures. Early in this century, Dr. Alexis Carrel came to scoff, but was converted instead. The Church's demands for checking and proof of alleged miracles are so stringent that in the more than a century since 1858 only a few more than 60 miracles have been approved. Madame Bire in 1908 came there, blind because her optic nerve was withered; she regained her sight when the Blessed Sacrament passed. But when the Doctors inspected her eyes, they found she was able to see even though the nerve was still withered--arranged, doubtless, to keep anyone from saying it was a case of suggestion. The nerve did recover within a few weeks.

"Paved with Souls" by Father M. Jeffery Bayhi

(Reflections on and from the Missionaries of Charity and the streets of Calcutta)

Continuing the story. . .

(Copies available in office)

Sister told me that many of the hospitals in Calcutta had standing agreements with them for the care of orphaned children. It often happened that young Indian girls would come into the hospitals under the pretense of being able to pay, give birth to their children and then leave in the middle of the night. Many times the nuns accepted babies who were only a day or two old. They took them into their care and made them a part of the orphanage. I sat there for about forty-five minutes playing with the children. It was so frustrating after a time because there was nothing with which they could play. There were no toys...no trucks, no dolls. They spoke no English; I spoke no Bengali and, with no toys or other objects to entertain them, our communication had ended. I excused myself, found Sister Charmaine and asked her permission to go out and get some toys. She said it would be fine so I immediately went into the marketplace in search of something for the children. I bought some big hollow balls that they could kick, some small rubber balls that could be thrown, and some plastic dolls. Though I couldn’t buy for 300 of them, I bought about thirty toys thinking the children could play together with them. When I returned to the orphanage it was like the real Santa Claus had come in the middle of August. The children saw me with the bags of toys and, before long, I

was back on the steps and they were all over me. They went through the bags grabbing toys, kissing me and thanking me all at once. They played with all the toys and were everywhere. This lasted about five minutes until most of the dolls were headless and the balls were being fought over. Like children everywhere they were coming back to me because someone took their ball, or someone had their doll. They kept repeating, "uncle", "padoo, padoo." It was so funny, I didn’t know what the hell they were saying. I laughed and mimicked them until I noticed one little boy in the group. He was obviously blind because he was leading with his hands. He crawled into my lap crying, "Uncle Padoo," because he had missed out on the toys. Because he was blind he hadn’t been quick enough to get one. I finally located a broken toy and gave it to him. He was happy to just sit in my lap and play with it. Meanwhile, in frustration, I would repeat "Uncle Padoo," and all the children would laugh and play, happy for a time at least.
